A Lonely Caballero

Updated: Jan 31, 2020

Cover art by Lea Sheldan

This is the perfect 'Vacation infatuation' expression, with a Kodak moment on a beach with an entertaining lady and a drunk, lonely caballero. The patrons are several pitchers deep in cerveza and ignore the romantic hiccup unfolding before them. Like a warm summer breeze, the Spanish guitar evokes romantic sunsets as we find the Mexican dude totally enamored by a senorita dancing around the firepit. She invites him to join in the fun but alas...he is too shy to act and eventually wanders off into the night.

For you guitar aficionados out there, I play this intro with a 'dropped-D tuning''. This simply means you carefully lower the bass E string to a D. I like this as it gives the guitar an edgy feel. In Twisted Gitar Music Studio, we added a bunch of reverb in certain spots to give it the WOW factor. 'A Lonely Caballero' is dramatic, moving and delightfully hilarious. Maracas, chimes, djembe and ocarina add colour and depth as the Smokeywine harmonies caress your ears like gentle waves on the ocean. Here we are basking in the warm embrace of a tropical paradise. I will never tire of the turquoise waters, the colourful fish, the umbrella drinks, the local music, the fresh fruit, the cheeky monkeys, the lazy lizards, the tanned cleavage, the smell of sunscreen, the beautiful beaches and all the romantic flavours of life on vacation. I'm lucky that I never have to pine after a beautiful senorita because I get to dance with my exotic wife, Lea any time anywhere. (leasheldan.com)

Here's a little taste of my past and present art adventures. I'm experimenting with the brilliant colours and textures of wool rovings in the fibre art that keeps us up way past midnight. The exhilarating process of creating art, music or poetry fires up the happy endorphins in my soul. So until next time, fare thee well to the passing of the moments that never return. And please enjoy those moments on your travels wherever they may be. Hello to my Australian listeners and all the folks in Canada and USA that heard my tunes this month! Keep on supporting organic, homegrown music and local artists; we love it when you download our stuff!

A Lonely Caballero

A lonely caballero drank on a warm Spanish night

Watching a senorita dance in the pale moonlight

She sang with the voice of an angel

As she beckoned him into her arms

He was caught in the spell of her beauty

But too shy to respond to her charms

So fare thee well to the passing

Of the moments that never return

Hey, barkeep please fill up our glasses

It’s none of this gringo’s concern

The lonely caballero longed to hold her hand

But the pretty senorita was dancing on the sand

She gave him a sign of welcome

He gave her a look of fear

As she twisted in beautiful circles

He ordered a pitcher of beer

The lonely caballero sat while the night drifted by

Till he saw a giant mosquito land on the young woman’s thigh

He hauled off and gave her a wallop

She tripped and fell to the ground

Stunned by his error in judgement

He left without making a sound

Fare thee well to the passing

Of the moments that never return

Hey, barkeep please fill up our glasses

It’s none of this gringo’s concern
