BC Song

'Gitarzilla' acryilic on canvas by Mark Sheldan

The circus comes to town with a rambling slide guitar, zipping past oddball places like Skookumchuck and Spuzzum. This upbeat, travelling country song is ideal for BC Tourism because it takes you on an fun excursion around the province, Learning geography can't get more entertaining than this. The journey to this week's track began on a long winding highway as I sat next to my good friend, Cecil Morrison who was driving the Greyhound bus. Destination: Penticton. Purpose: to meet up with my darling, the other half of smokeywine.com. Cecil could only take me as far as Hope but as we talked, I heard a plethora of stories about the wonderful communities he'd seen.

I was welcomed to the Okanagan where I met an award winning photographer by the name of Dan Lybarger. He captured this fine image which exemplifies the majesty of South Eastern British Columbia. I am privileged to be his son in law, lucky to be married to his artistic, vibrant daughter, Lea. (leasheldan.com) If anyone can inspire me to be the best person I can be, it is 'Dan the man'.

our front yard in bloom

In the 1970's, I came to BC and I saw the beauties of the coastline for the first time and felt the power in the majestic mountains. I realized I had to create a life for myself here. Almost fifty years has gone by and every bit of it I have felt like I belong. I am a British Columbian, whatever that means. There is peace in the valley and I feel Like I am home. I wrote this song so that people can sing their hearts out on the chorus. I tried to mention everybody's town but, alas, It was impossible. I apologize if I missed your perfect, provincial paradise.

But just like BC weather where anything can happen, you get everything in this track. I added a taste of banjo with some exciting fingerpicking on my guitar and you'll hear a phenomenal, cascading performance on the dobro, expertly played by Peter Honychurch. Lea flavours it up with her harmonies keeping it light, airy and fun.

Thanks to all my fans around the globe...it means the world to me that these songs are enhancing your lives or giving you some pleasure. Music and poetry are an expression of what we do so please keep on downloading and listening and sharing what we do. Peace to you all.

Until next time, remember: love the place you call your home! Cheers! Mark Sheldan.
