Country Boy

Acrylic Painting by Mark Sheldan

A slow dance, a starry night, a cowboy singing to his sweetheart, this week's release is elegant in its simplicity. Written many years ago, 'Country Boy' is an acoustic ballad that pulls on your heartstrings with its honest touchy-feely lyrics. At the time I wrote this song, I was alone in my room; just me, a bottle of red wine and my old Guild guitar. The joke is I sing about dancing in three four time but the song is actually in four four time. I guess I was trying to inject a bit of humor that musicians might pick up.

Here are two incredible shots that Dan Lybarger took in Penticton about twenty years ago. I had quite a moustache, thick glasses and semi-authentic cowboy attire. The shadow lighting turned me into the mystery man and Dan hung a gigantic copy of it outside of his house on Duncan Avenue. It's a great photo of my Guild , the one that helped me write this song.

Facelift on the old Guild

Here it is now...long retired - a painting of the reflection of the songs it has been a part of. As you listen to the song, you will hear the rambling guitar sweep along like a drifting tumbleweed as angelic, western harmonies wrap around you like a favourite pair of jeans, faded blue. It's a classic country love song sure to put a grin on your chin and a hop in your line dancing. It was recorded in maple Ridge in 1994 when Lea and I first met. (www.leasheldan.com) It's not the greatest recording, having been converted from cassette tape to digital , but it's an oldie and a goodie. Since then, we've done a lot of dancing and a lot of recording.

Sing along with the lyrics below:

Country Boy

This old world sure can be tough

When the road I’m on gets rough

I look into my heart and think of you

With a golden love so strong and fair

And eyes that show you really care

I’ll always be a country boy for you

I’ll always be a country boy for you

With a cowboy shirt and jeans faded blue

We can dance in three four time

I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine

And I’ll always be a country boy for you

Rainy days, rainy nights

Busy streets and city lights

Can make anybody sing the blues

I’ll blow a kiss to the stars above

And thank 'em for your gift of love

And I’ll always be a country boy for you

I’ll always be a country boy for you

With a cowboy shirt and jeans faded blue

We can dance in three four time

I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine

And I’ll always be a country boy for you

Time goes on everyday

Life just simply slips away

I wish that there was more that I could do

To show you my love is strong

Before our time together’s gone

But I’ll always be a country boy for you

I’ll always be a country boy for you

With a cowboy shirt and jeans faded blue

We can dance in three four time

I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine

And I’ll always be a country boy for you

We can dance in three four time

I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine

And I’ll always be a country boy for you
