Picture a lone cowboy, loping along, searching for the land of his dreams... This week's new release is a fantastic story brought on by insomnia, loneliness and Grand Marnier. I was living at the Albion Ranch - single, ripe and ready for adventure. I was pumping out songs by the hour back then and this one made me chuckle when I wrote the horse part. I did a bit of horseback riding on the ranch with Max, a true horseman. During that time, I witnessed a drunk guy who, on his fortieth birthday, rode his palomino up the stairs into the house, through the kitchen, while sucking on a bottle of Mescal, contemplating eating the worm. Life was strange then.
This song is pure country swing that features a gypsy fiddle played by Bohdan G. Siedlecki; the best violinist know. I sing about palm trees as Lea (LeaSheldan.com) shakes the rain stick and storm tube. She also pounds on the Lybongo drums with superball sticks that Craig Lybarger made. I finger pick on my Larrivee guitar with an easy loping gait that carries you to an imaginary paradise on horseback. We (Smokeywine.com) produced and recorded this track at S.O.S. Studios in Langley with Shawn Stewart at the helm.
Wouldn't it be nice if there actually was a place where everything was free and Grand Marnier flowed endlessly? But alas, social media and promotional imagery hits us in the face and tells us there are greener pastures out there. Most of us are just fingertips away from our 'Shangri-la' as we get caught in our own teardrops on the path beyond the great divide.
Lea and I have tasted a few morsels of the good life in many of our travels since getting married in 1996. When we first laid eyes on the Caribbean Islands, we knew there were many Arcadian Gardens and Utopian Edens to enjoy around the world. From there, we travelled to exotic cities in the US, Mexico, Aruba, Jamaica, Bahamas and Cuba! Everywhere we went, we experienced the perfect and the imperfect, which made us love and appreciate our own promised land even more. Speaking of exploring the world, hello to my listeners in Vancouver, Penticton, Toronto, Turkey and Australia. Even if I'm not travelling right now, my songs are. Thank you for supporting organic, homegrown music and local artists. So, with a yippee kai yay and this crazy song, I hope everyone is as happy as can be. Mark Sheldan.

Sing along with the lyrics below:
Lone Cowboy
I’m a lone cowboy just ridin’ the range
Me and my horse feel a little bit strange
The sun’s beating down on that dusty old trail
I’m searchin’ for the land of my of my dreams
Where the palm trees sway and children play
And everything is free
Where Grand Marnier is the thing to say
And everyone is happy as can be
But I’m a lone cowboy just herdin’ the sheep
Nobody to talk to, not even Little Bo Peep
But the sun’s beating down on that dusty old trail
And I’m searchin’ for the land of my of my dreams
Where the palm trees sway and children play
And everything is free
Where Grand Marnier is the thing to say
And everyone is happy as can be
Maybe it’s caught in a teardrop
And it’s just too hard to see
Could be on the other side of the Great Divide
Like the north wind blowing free
But I’m a lone cowboy just rollin’ along
With a yippee kai yay and this crazy song
The sun’s beatin’ down on this dusty old trail
And I’m searchin’ for the land of my dreams
Where the palm trees sway and children play
And the women all love me
Where Grand Marnier is the thing to say
And everyone is happy as can be
I’m searchin’ for the land of my dreams
Where everyone is happy as can be
I'm searchin' for the land of my dreams
