Springtime wakes up the world with its hopeful message that love will come a running. My heart skips a beat when I ogle early flowers, halter tops and short shorts. This sing-along, folk song was born after a trip to Galiano Island where I breathed the ocean air and heard the sounds of Mother Earth coming to life.
This pic is not of Galiano but it is an island, ripe and ready for the prospects of love and romance. Isn't it funny that so many couples split up just before Valentine's day seeking fresh new love. One year I was single, ripe and ready; healing from a bad breakup and looking for adventures with somebody new. On a lonely spring evening, one of my buddies dragged me to a corporate party in the city. I got gussied up; donning my square-toed, knee-high, deerskin boots, silk shirt and the finest thrift store jacket I could buy.
I happened to sit beside a pretty girl to eat my free buffet dinner and beer. The conversation began with her admiring my boots and it ended with me walking away with her phone number in my pocket and a smile on my face. I called her up and we met at Granville Island for a dinner date.
Alas, love was not to be. It was awkward, we had nothing in common and it definitely did not end with a kiss. Turns out, she was more enamoured with my boots than she was with me.
Get a load of these boots that I wore on Halloween, 2014. I was the Bone Master and Lea was my gypsy queen. www.leasheldan.com We learned how to throw bones that year, telling all kinds of fortunes to the eager listeners. We couldn't have predicted that this song would become a crowd favourite. It's got a chorus so catchy, you can't help but sing along. The dobro is beautifully played by the incredible Peter Honychurch Mitchell. The acoustic bass by Rene Worst lends to a travelling circus gypsy jug band kind of vibe. Vince Ditrich from 'Spirit Of The West' taps a delightful canter on the drums while Douglas Schmidt's eclectic accordion adds magic to the mix. The brilliant harmonica you hear is compliments of Peter Lizotte and Patricia Conroy honours us with her beautiful, background vocals.
In 1991 I had no idea I would become the painter and artist I am today, so I commissioned a local fellow from the hood to do my album cover art. I gave him a promo pic of me in front of a cafe with an angry dude glaring out the window. The mountains were added and the guy was changed to a pretty woman as per my request. 'Love'll come a-Running' is the title track to my 10 song solo album which had some success on radio stations back east.
Until next time, believe in yourself and let it grow!

Sing along with the lyrics below:
Love'll come a-Running
It’s springtime everybody knows
Gotta get some lovin’ that’s the way it goes
Hang around till the warm wind blows
Love’ll come a-runnin' to you
Life is short; life is sweet
Think with your heart and walk with your feet
Do your best to be complete
Love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a- runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
Sun goes up, sun goes down
Every day in this old town
Go on and chase your dreams around
Love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
Get up in the morning, say hello
To the big old world and what do you know
Believe in yourself and let it grow
Love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a- runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a- runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
It’s springtime everybody knows
Gotta get some lovin’ that’s the way it goes
Hang around till the warm wind blows
Love’ll come a-runnin' to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a- runnin’ to you
Love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’, love’ll come a-runnin’ to you
repeat
