'Whiskey Welcome Home' is the sort of song that happens when you are rubber-lipped and you realize that it's all over but the drinking. Gee, when has that ever happened??? A classic for the country audience, this is an ode to the bottle. The title came to me one day as I was working and sweating at my going-nowhere job. I quickly jotted it down on a scrap piece of paper and finished it later with a glass in my hand.
This old bottle came from under Sherry's house along with a bunch of other relics. Or should I say treasures. Sadly, it was empty but I love the label that says "For the discriminating drunk and the indiscreet host". It's 280 proof and it says squirt on one side of a sketch of a guy with his tongue sticking out. Under the pic is written: "Contains positively no vitamins" and "The flavour lingers". Also "Wrawkin Wrye never tastes thin, it tastes awful." Instructions on the back say: "Pour into a tall glass, place a spoon in with the right hand, stir like hell." How could you not want this bottle? The people who designed this label must have had a lot of fun doing it. Lea and I (LeaSheldan.com) also had buckets of fun producing and recording this song in a barn studio, Maple Ridge,1994. It was Smokeywine's (Smokeywine.com) first album 'Country Love' and this was the icing on the top of the music cake.
This fibre art painting is my second stab at poking wool bits into a felt canvas. It represents the morning after quite well. Don't you think this face needs the hair of the dog that bit him? If you don't know what that means, you're too young to drink. Drunk or sober, you will enjoy this ditty for it's fine guitar picking, cartoon conversations and quirky background chatter enough to make you giggle. With a lonesome, wailing harmonica this sad story is saturated with poor, pitiful me lyrics and a crowd-pleasing sing-along chorus. This classic recording gets down and dirty and carries its weight in goofball gold.
Shout out to my new listeners in Port Coquitlam, Squamish, Istanbul, {Turkey} and Drusenheim, {France}. It never ceases to amaze us that our music is getting to the other side of the world. Keep on supporting organic, homegrown music and local artists. Once again, thanks for gathering round me to hear the weekly snippet of my life . Remember - always enjoy your whiskey responsibly. Sing along with the lyrics below:
Whiskey Welcome Home
My wife and me, we go out individually
She goes out with all her friends
And I go out with me
When I get home she’s usually gone
But I don’t sit and moan
I crack another bottle
And it’s whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Come and gather round me
And I’ll tell you why I’m stoned
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
I just need another drink
And it’s whiskey welcome home
My wife and me, we don’t talk
There ain’t much to say
She screams at me between the soaps
And I just turn away
The counselor said we should pick at it
Oh, we’ve picked it to the bone
I just want another drink
And it’s whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Come and gather round me
And I’ll tell you why I’m stoned
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
I just need another drink
And it’s whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Come and gather round me
And I’ll tell you why I’m stoned
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
I just need another drink
And it’s whiskey welcome home
She’s got a bunch of little pills that keep her occupied
I’ve got a forty pounder that keeps me satisfied
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
Come and gather round me
And I’ll tell you why I’m stoned
Whiskey welcome home
Whiskey welcome home
I just need another drink
And it’s whiskey welcome home
