Lifeline

Fibre Art by Lea Sheldan of a Painting by Aurora Lybarger

This week's Celtic ballad speaks of the unconditional love of someone who's got your back no matter what. With tender, emotional lyrics, I pour my heart out, exposing insecurities, conflicts and inner battles that more than a few of us can relate to. I count my lucky stars every day that I have someone who catches me when I fall in this crazy, unpredictable world. (marksheldan.com) Even when I'm down so low, I can't get out of my pajamas, my baberoni doesn't run away. He accepts me as I am and throws me a lifeline to help me realize that our life is pretty good, afterall. Then, I experience a moment of safety, security and happiness, just as I imagine the little elephant is feeling.

I'm remembering the cat mania that took place here about 5 years ago when a litter of kittens were thrust into our world and fraidy cat Ladybug was made a teenage mommy, feeding six hungry, whiny boys. Talk about being a lifeline for those little critters. But I think it was harder on me to let them go than it was for her! She's probably still mad at me for keeping one of them and occasionally takes it out on poor Romeo, the handsome one she's kissing on the left. Animals can be a lifeline for people in distress - they calm me down.

Julia Vidakovic and Daisy

What makes this love ballad different from others is the beautiful blending of the gentle mandolin with the delicate strings of a harp called 'Daisy'. Julia Vidakovic really channeled the essence of the song using interesting runs and precise chording when she came to record at Twisted Gitar Music Studio. Mark Sheldan played the sweet mandolin to fill in all the necessary vacant spots and once again, you'll hear my familiar Smokeywine harmonies to add drama and passion to the deep lyrical content. I'm hoping it's the right amount of cheese for y'all. And really, the world needs another sappy love song, don't you think? Can I get an AMEN in here?

If the world happens to give you a friend, a partner or an angel that helps you through a tough spot, then consider yourself a lucky soul. And if it feels good, do something nice for someone else who may need an angel just like you! Shout out to our new listeners in the Netherlands, Denmark, Missouri and Atlanta. We are pinning you onto our world map, expanding our horizons to the ends of the Earth.

World Map of Listeners

Mark's listeners are the blue pins and mine are the red ones. He's in Argentina, New Zealand and Australia and I'm in Japan and South America. It's a blast that Spotify and Distrokid give you the breakdown of when and where each song gets heard and the micro amount of pennies each stream or download gives us. I think we're up to about $4.62. hahaha! At least it's getting out there, that is the most satisfying point of this adventure. As the Year of the Great Release comes to a close, Smokeywine thanks you all for supporting organic, homegrown music and local artists. Deepak Chopra says, "Choose the power of kindness, compassion and love" and I believe this is a vital way to live. I'd like to add my own philosophy to that - Love, laugh and dance every day. Cheers! ~*.*~ Lea Sheldan

Lifeline

So many days, I could not find myself

I’d hide upon the shelf

Not wanting to come out and show my face

You gave me space

In many ways, I tortured my own mind

I’d hide the pain inside

Not wanting to be brave and face my fears

You dried my tears

You are my lifeline, when I’m lost at sea

If I was drowning, you would rescue me

When I’m turned around, burning out, knocked so hard I’m on the ground

Though I don’t know why… you throw me a lifeline

You are my lifeline

Too many times, I’d conjure up a fight

I wouldn’t do what’s right

Not wanting to conform, I lost my way

And yet you stayed

You are my lifeline, when I’m lost at sea

If I was drowning, you would rescue me

And when I’m turned around, burning out, knocked so hard I’m on the ground

Though I don’t know why… you throw me a lifeline

You are my lifeline

I wake up shaking drenched in sweat and feel the anger rise

I turn to you for comfort and you’re there to my surprise

When I wasn’t hungry and when I couldn’t sleep

You held me tight and somehow gave me peace

You are my lifeline, when I’m lost at sea

If I was drowning, you would rescue me

And when I’m turned around, burning out, knocked so hard I’m on the ground

Though I don’t know why… you throw me a lifeline

You are my lifeline

You are my lifeline . . . you are my lifeline
