Booze cruise dancing in Aruba

The waltz, the jive, the boogaloo, square-hopping or pole dancing, whatever the groove you're into, do it! Dancing makes you happy, healthy and gets your heart gloriously pumping. This week's new release is a love song full of desire and innuendo. It's about a girl in love with a boy so bad she can't think, eat or sleep without him. She begs him to hold her hand, kiss in the dark and slow dance in the park. He has to acquiesce to her requisitions or he will surely become undone! It's the blues mixed with country with soulful folk elements thrown in for shits and giggles.

Here's us dancing in the park in Penticton for a Smokeywine photo shoot with my dad, Dan Lybarger. The great thing about Mark is he will dance with me anywhere, anytime, with or without music. Besides the fact that I tend to lead, he's always a willing partner, even if he does step on my toes once in a while. (marksheldan.com)

I'm the short one in the back row

I used to teach jazz, tap and ballet to Summerland kids under the tutelage of Bev Graham School of Dance. We held elaborate recitals filled with homemade costumes and hand painted backdrops. After that, I opened up a short-lived dance studio in Penticton called Peaches and Dreams where I also taught aerobic classes every day at high noon to a group of ladies, including my mother, Joan Lybarger, who worked at the Western Advertiser where she rounded up most of my class.

Me and mom performing back in the day.

Mom looked so happy in this picture of us performing in Penticton. She liked to sing harmonies with me and sometimes we would switch and I would take over. It got to the point where you couldn't distinguish who was doing what, our voices were so similar. She taught me about singing with my head voice and when to do a lower harmony as opposed to the more popular upper third harmony. A class act, my mom. I sure do miss her.

Happy when they're dancing

I wanted to feature dad and mom's whistling skills on this song but they didn't want to come to Vancouver to record it. So I took my little camera with sound recording capabilities to their house. Dad had no giddy-up in his whistle so we went with mom only. She made up a beautiful melody with harmony, which I forced her to do over and over until it was perfect. I remember her getting so mad, she nearly gave up, but we pushed through. In the end we had lots of awesome tracks to work with back at the studio in Langley. Mark added expert mandolin and guitar leads while Shawn Stewart did his thang on the bass. Both of them sang the echoing bee-gees and I did the rest of the harmonies, of course. The neat thing about this song is that every time we played it, my parents were compelled to get up and dance. Awww, the magic of music.

Dancing till the end of time

Speaking of magic, the internet has revealed that I have a new listener in Sao Goncalo, Brazil. Thanks to all those who support organic, homegrown music and local artists. Creative people unite!

Until next time, remember to Love, Laugh and Dance. ~*.*~ Lea Sheldan

Sing along with the lyrics below:

Slow Dancing

Oh, I want you so bad for a long, slow dance

Sometimes, darling, want you to hold my hand

I dream about you at night, thinking of your smile

Come a little closer; let me kiss your sweet lips while we’re

Slow dancing in the dark (slow dancing)

Slow dancing around the park (slow dancing)

Slow dancing till the end of time

Please say that you’ll be mine

Doesn’t matter what you do or what you say

Gonna get your sweet loving one fine day

Look at me and you’ll know I’m the one

Who’s gonna make your heart come undone

Oh, I need you to see, I could set you free

It’s paradise, baby, dancing in the dark with me

Slow dancing in the dark (slow dancing)

Slow dancing around the park (slow dancing)

Slow dancing till the end of time

Please say that you’ll be mine, all mine

Slow dancing in the dark

To the beat of my pounding heart

Slow dancing feels so fine

I can’t wait to make you mine all mine

Oh, I want you so bad, give our love a chance

I’m begging you, darling, can I have this long slow dance

Slow dancing in the dark (slow dancing)

Slow dancing all around the park (slow dancing)

Slow dancing all night long (slow dancing)

Slow dancing to our favorite song (slow dancing)

Slow dancing every night with you (slow dancing)

Slow dancing is all I wanna do (slow dancing)

Slow dancing till the end of time

Please say that you’ll be mine

All mine, all mine

Won't you please say that you'll be mine

All mine, All mine

Please say that you'll be mine

awesome whistling outro...
