Sad Over You

Cancun Vacation photo by Mark Sheldan

It's the sad, sexy blues that make you feel for the girl who is lost, alone and wanting for her man. This is an all too familiar broken-heart, love story. It's sung with a pleading, mournful tone, accented with haunting harmonies, building to a powerful but desolate bridge. The tragedy is that her lover is gone for good but the irony is that he stays with her forever in her heart, body and mind. Her loss is the boss of her life. Is it real or is it all in her head, you may ask? It's powerful, beautiful misery all in one song.

Sometimes, love can be like a unicorn; magical, mystical and fickle. A soft kiss or a nibble one moment and the next, they are gallivanting around, leaving you with a jagged scar from their horniness... Unfortunately in life, people leave you, but in this situation, my guy died so there's that. Shortly after, I thought he telephoned me from beyond the grave to play a cosmic trick. I felt that he'd been hanging around as a spirit, watching me for some time and then one night, I got a strange phone call where I heard my name whispered very softly and then nothing... Goosebumps yet? So now you know about the secret, morbid third verse stuck inside of 'Sad Over You'. As usual, songwriting helped get me through the hard times.

Last year, Mark (marksheldan.com) and I went up to Buntzen Lake to take some promo shots for my album 'Anything Goes'. Here's a good one of me with the acoustic guitar that my dad and I painted. On 'Sad Over You', I play my Tely and use some fancy jazz chords that I learned from an old Doc Watson song. Mark played a delightful harmonica while Steve Horvat injected stunning lead-guitar riffs in and around the vocals. The pulsing bass and the laid-back midi drums played by Shawn Stewart provided the heartbeat. It's new grass, dancing with country western, on its way down jazz alley. Recorded and mastered at Hangover Studios in Langley BC by Shawn Stewart, it's one of my favourite tracks on the 'Swing Some Blues Some' album. (Smokeywine.com)

Here are some random gig shots with Mark, Daryl, Rick and Kimi Soo, just to show you guys out there that I enjoy being on stage. Have since I was kid. As you can see, so does Mark. We are Smokeywine the duo. Happy to entertain you for any and all occasions. Here's a promo poem for your perusal.

Sing along with the lyrics below:

Sad Over You

When I sing the blues

Storm clouds the room

Lightning strikes my eyes

It’s then I realize

That I’m blue, sad over you

When I’m falling apart

You come back to my heart

Everything I do or say

Makes me think of yesterday

I get blue, sad over you

I’m sad, sad over you

I'm sad, sad over you

You call me up sometimes

Say I’ve been on your mind

I hear you whisper my name

Is it real or just a game?

Could it be, you’re sad over me

Can’t you hear me crying?

I’m dying over you

I’m so lonely for you only

Makes me sad I can’t have a man like you

I’m sad, sad over you

I'm sad, sad over you

When I sing the blues

Storm clouds the room

Muddy water in my skies

And it’s raining in my eyes

‘cuz I’m sad over, mad over, feeling bad over

you know I’m sad over you

I’m sad, sad over you

I'm sad, sad over you . . .

I’m sad
